Trip Part 1 Newport

Despite being a born and bred Oregonian I had never been north of Lincoln City. So about five months ago I decided it was time to rectify this situation. Ben and I planned a trip for the month of June to hit some of the big attractions at the northern coast. For example, each year at Cannon Beach they hold a sandcastle building contest. It's famed around the world. And this year we got to go!

But not to get ahead of myself...we left bright and early Friday morning. We spent about three hours in the car driving to Newport to go to the Sea Aquarium, or "underwater zoo". By happenchance, some good friends planned to go the very same day! We had a great time enjoying the over and underwater displays. Some of the over water displays were of sea lions, an octopus and an atrium full of birds. The underwater displays were fantastic. You accessed them by walking through huge glass tunnels under the water. There were sharks, exotic fish, many many creatures. But to the kids' delight a diver inside the tank played peekaboo with them for about ten minutes. Easily the highlight of our morning! We also saw the new display "Swampland". There was an alligator, several gigantic snakes (eew) and all kinds of other critters.

It was wonderful. The kiddo's also liked the hands on display where they could touch starfish, sea anemones and other slimy things. FUN!

After we ate a yummy picnic lunch it was goodbye to Newport and on to Tillamook. (Yay for naptime in the car!)
